Off to a great start..

We are just closing in on our 3rd week for school.  The kids have been working very hard.  They have been learning about place value, comparing numbers and ordering numbers in math.  In Social Studies, they have been studying about the land bridge theory and the culture of the 5 native groups.  We have also performed exciting science experiments and learned how "to do" science. All of the students have been learning how to read with "stamina" and write narrative stories with details.  More importantly, they are learning how to follow classroom procedures, so they can work in small groups within reading, math and writing.  Please be sure to ask them about all these exciting things at home!

I am finding many students in our class are below in their reading level.  The only way to help ensure they read on grade level is to practice, practice, practice.  Students should be reading at least 20 minutes each night at home, yet I would encourage more if possible.  The more they read the more they improve.  Students are assigned homework on a nightly basis, Monday-Thursday.  I only assign 1 page of math, 20 minutes of reading, a short assignment in Science or Social Studies (never both at the same time) and a writing assignment. Students should be able to do their homework on their own, but students with lower reading levels may experience issues and need some assistance.

While we are practicing math fluency (facts) at school, it is imperative that students practice their multiplication facts at home on a regular basis. They will need to have these facts memorized to be successful in 4th grade math.  I have exposed them to online games as well as card games they can play to practice.  However, flash cards never go out of style!

Finally, the fewer behavior issues we have during the school day, the more I can teach them, so please speak with your students about the importance of following class and school rules at all times.  Most of them have realized I maintain an orderly classroom and have high expectations, but some are still trying to interfere with the learning process.  If I don't have to be interrupted for the behavior issues, we can do so much more in the classroom.

I am always available to talk about your child's progress and hope to see you all soon!
